In 1883 Frank Ward Putnam, then chief of archaeology at Harvard's Peabody Museum, visited the "Great Serpent mound." Immediately recognizing it's significance he began preservation efforts. Thanks to the fund raising efforts of a group of Boston philanthropist known as the "Ladies of Boston" it was purchased in 1885 for $6,000 dollars. In 1890 it was transferred from the Harvard University to the Ohio Historical Society for perpetual care as a free public park.
