Using simple digging tools the Hopewell Indians began construction of Fort Ancient around 100 A.D. By hauling 30 to 40 pound basket loads of earth and gravel South Fort was completed first. Middle and North would eventually follow. When completed around 300 A.D. the 4 to 23 foot high earthen walls would combine to comprise and earthwork containing over 3 1/2 miles of earth and gravel. Curiously, the Hopewell builders left 67 large openings in the earthen walls. Today, some archaeologist theorize that these openings were created to mark astrological alignments which may have been important to the Hopewell Indians.
