Made Ohio's first state park in 1891; Fort Ancient contains within it's boundaries the largest hilltop enclosure in North America. Though named Fort Ancient, the earthwork was not constructed by the Fort Ancient Indians who once inhabited the area over 1,000 years ago, but by Ohio's mound building culture the Hopewell Indians over 700 years before the Fort Ancient cultures existence.
